In an interview with Men's Health, President Obama considered a new sin tax as a means of reducing the public's demand for sugary soda. Citing the obesity and sugar-laden soda connection, the president found that - in order to impact the population's health - curtailing soda consumption is a helpful endeavor.

But it's so fatty-em-up-fatty-fat good! We can't HELP but eat sh** foods! And now it costs more for that delicious fatness! But we'll DIE without it!!!

Anyone else think about how the price of cigarettes keeps going up? How many people are really willing to go through the pain of quitting as opposed to the pain of spending more and more?

It's just a way to get more money from people you know aren't willing to change their lifestyles under the guise of helping people.

Since I don't buy much of that stuff and I've quit smoking...TAX AWAY! Don't affect me none. I do notice that my taxes don't DEcrease any time another tax increases, though.

Odd, that.

Here in Pittsburgh, PA, they want to impose this sin tax on sugary drinks which I am all for. However, the tax they want to place on these items is $0.02 per OUNCE.

1 gallons = 128 ounces = $2.56 worth of tax. On a gallon of sweetened iced tea, that doubles the price.

It's only on the ready made stuff, though, right? They're not throwing the tax on sugar it's self. So you'd skip that tax if you whipped up some homemade ice tea?

Very true, and I personally do not drink that type of stuff, other than some fruit juices (which are also considered sugary drinks). It is the principle of, "Do we really need to add that amount of tax on everyday beverages?" I am all for some type of sin tax, but I would think that it needs to be limited to a point where it is not going to almost double the price of some drinks. Seems like the gov. is just finding more reasons to "take" money from us.

        Which basically was my thought.

And it doesn't look like they'll run out of "reasons" anytime soon, does it?

If they do they'll make them up.
